Mental Domain
“Soldiers must be capable of overcoming adversaries at a moment’s notice. To do this, Soldiers must be
mentally as well as physically ready. They must possess the physical, cognitive, emotional, and
interpersonal capabilities to fight and win in multi-domain operations.”
FM 7-22 Chapter 9 – Mental Readiness
Mental Skills for performance include three overarching skills: cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal.
Cognitive skills refer to the ability to integrate knowledge into sound and efficient decision making.
Emotional skills refer to the ability to recognize your own emotions and to use strategies to regulate
them based on the situation at hand. Interpersonal skills refer to how you interact with the people
around you, whether they be peers, subordinates, or leaders. This includes the use of effective
communication and empathy.
Whether you are looking to deal with your stress in a healthy way, or you want to get your mind right
for the challenge of a special school (Ranger, Sapper, Airborne, Air Assault), etc., there are many ways to
increase your mental skills. Below you’ll find a collection of resources in topic ranging from healthy
coping skills, assertive communication, all the way to managing self-care with a busy schedule.
For more tailored education, you can schedule a one-on-one consultation with CPT Murray. You can also
sign up for the Operationalize Stress class that occurs on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 1030 in
Hangar 1. (All Hangar 1 classes can be brought to your unit footprint with advance scheduling).
